01/01/2022 NEWSLETTER

Dear Flight Attendants:

Another year has come and gone. 2021 was as difficult as 2020 but in different ways.

Covid still not controlled, unruly passengers, vaccination mandates, oversold flights and  now daily cancellations due to pilot shortages and the omicron variant….it leaves us all wondering if it will ever end or is this to remain the new “normal.” Through all of this and more, Mesa Flight Attendants have stood strong and resilient. Sometimes it is difficult to keep going and push through the hard times but you have done it and done it well! You should all be proud of yourselves and each other! I know I am very proud of you!

Negotiations started this year with the hopes of getting an expedited contract. We still hold to those hopes and will keep you updated after each session. Our next bargaining  session is scheduled for the week of January 24, 2022.

We are excited to have our website up and running. We will begin phasing away from the Elines and posting more and more information directly to the website. Look for grievance forms, group grievances, and an interactive participation section to be added soon! The website is a work in progress and changes will continue to be made so please take time to visit our site often!

Cancelled flights and reassignments will continue. Please do not argue with scheduling if you believe your contract is being violated. There has been a large number of schedulers, scheduling supervisors and the scheduling manager resign. Those we have are very new and they do not know the contract or confuse it with the pilots contract. Try to give them a break. Giving them a break doesn’t mean you let them violate your contract and it is pointless to argue with someone that doesn’t know your contract. Instead, reach out to your LEC President and they will handle the situation. You can find the contact information for your LEC President under the Officers and Representative tab on the mesaafa website.

I have been notified that United schedules may be late, causing issues with the bidding timeline. United has not released the flying we will be doing for February making it impossible for crew planning to build schedules. This is the same problem we dealt with during COVID 2020. We will keep you posted as more information becomes available.

We have a backlog of grievances at the arbitration level. Unfortunately, the labor attorney employed by Mesa resigned and has not been replaced. We have been trying to work with the company without much luck. The management representative with whom we are currently working is neither a labor attorney nor possesses a labor background.  In addition, we continually have trouble scheduling meetings with him to review and work to resolve our grievances.  We hope to meet with the Company in February to discuss and possibly settle a number of these grievances.  We will keep you posted on any developments.

January 10, 2022 is fast approaching. We will be asking the AFA Executive Board to make IAH their own stand alone Council! We are super excited for this! If we get this approved, the IAH Council will begin March 1, 2022. There will be interim Officers appointed until an election by the members is held. We will keep you updated on the outcome as soon as we know.

Also coming in 2022….Council 56 and Council 88 Officer elections! LEC Officers are elected by the members of their Councils. Please make sure your personal email and current mailing address is updated with membership so that you will receive your nomination and voting ballots! You can update your information on our website under the membership tab!

MEC Officer elections will also be held in 2022, after Council elections are completed. The MEC Officers are elected by the LEC Presidents for a term of three (3) years.

As we move into 2022, please remember to stay informed and involved! Union begins with “U” and YOU are why WE are here! We are in this together!

Be safe out there, watch out for each other and hope for better things to come in 2022!

In Unity,

Maggie Fox
MEC President/LECP56
